Our last Parent Math Academy for this school year will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2015. Session 1 will be from 9:00-10:00 am and session 2 from 5:00-6:00 pm. We hope to see you there!
The math classroom today looks different from what many of us remember. One of the most important goals is that students learn how to think. Research reveals that in addition to math content, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity are skills we should develop in students. This translates to the Paine Intermediate math classroom through real-world problems, exchange of ideas, numerical flexibility, development of conceptual knowledge and procedural fluency.

Why Math is Taught Differently Today
In this video, Dr. Raj Shah, mathematics educator, discusses some of the reasons why math is taught differently today.
Dr. Shah is a life-long lover of math who graduated from Dublin Coffman High School in 1989, earned his B.S in Physics from The Ohio State University and went on the earn his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Illinois in 1998. Armed with his advanced degree, he worked for 9 years in R&D and management at Intel, Dr. Shah quit his job in 2008 to pursue his passion of introducing kids to the wonder of mathematics and teaching them to THINK rather than just memorize. For the past four years, Dr. Shah has been building programs at Math Plus Academy that develop problem-solving skills, build confidence and help inspire kids to do great things.
